DBAS UK Committee

Working Together for Patients and Families

DBAS UK is managed by an Executive Committee of volunteers, elected at the May 2023 AGM

Leisa Batkin - Chair

I live in Leeds with my husband and our 4 children. Our youngest, Christie was diagnosed with DBA when she was 3 months old. She is currently on regular blood transfusions and chelation therapy.

I joined the committee to help and support other families and have an interest in social welfare of our families and work in Health.

Peter Redmond - Treasurer

I live in Jersey with my wife Trish and two children Holly and Joe (DBA). Joe was transfusion dependent and did not respond to steroids. Amazingly Holly was a perfect match for Joe, so in 2012 he had a successful Bone Marrow Transplant. We are now a very lucky, hospital-free family.

I have been actively involved in the DBA Committee for the last 13 years and find it hugely rewarding to be able to help and support other families through their own DBA journeys.

Ellie Hudson - Secretary

I am Ellie and I live near Cambridge with my husband and our three children – Amelia, Louis and Finley. Finley is the only one with DBA. He is transfusion dependent. He is also deaf, had open heart surgery and a failed steroid trial however, he is thriving and loves his hospital days.

I joined the committee this year, after becoming inspired to help the charity following last year’s family conference.

Joanne Hubbard - Fundraising Support

I live in Redcar with my husband Paul and three children Jack, William, and Ruby. Ruby has DBA and was diagnosed at six weeks.

Ruby is blood transfusion dependent, every four weeks and takes Exjade for iron chelation. Ruby had a steroid trial but failed to respond.

Jayson Whitaker - Trustee

I am one of the founder members of the charity and current support group. My son Charlie had transfusion dependent DBA. He had a transplant which failed after

10 years, so has had a second transplant which was successful. I have 3 other children who do not have DBA.
